Mechanisms underlying germline formation

Germ cells are specialized cells that can transmit genetic materials from one generation to the next in sexual reproduction. All of the other cells of the body are somatic cells. This separation of germ and somatic cells is one of the oldest problems in developmental biology. Our laboratory aims to find the evolutionarily conserved mechanisms regulating germline segregation, and germline sex determination.

By using Drosophila, we are trying hard to clarify the mechanism regulating germline-specific and sex-specific gene expression in the germline progenitors.
